Getting started with archery
Do I need any experience to start archery?
No experience is needed. Most people start with a Come ‘N’ Try session, where you’ll learn the basics in a safe, supportive environment.
What types of archery can I do?
There are a few different styles of archery you can explore, depending on your interests and what your local club offers.
Target archery
The most common type – shooting at a fixed target over set distances, typically outdoors or at an indoor range.
Field archery
Shot over varied terrain, often in bushland, with targets set at different distances. It’s a more dynamic, outdoor experience.
Clout archery
A traditional style where archers shoot at a flag placed on the ground from long distances, aiming for accuracy over range. It’s a unique and social format that’s often shot in groups.
Bow types
You’ll also see different types of bows used across these disciplines:
- Recurve – A traditional-style bow and the most common starting point for beginners. Also used in Olympic competition.
- Compound – A modern bow with a pulley system, offering more power and precision. Compound archery will make its Olympic debut at the LA 2028 Games in the mixed team event.
- Barebow – A recurve bow shot without sights or stabilisers, focusing on instinct and technique.
- Longbow/traditional – A classic style of archery focused on simplicity and feel.
Your local club can help you try different styles and find what suits you best.
